guild of st camillus

guild 2

A group of supporters based mainly in Dublin who helped the Camillians to become established in Ireland. These men would visit the Sick in their homes and in the hospitals.

Fr O'Connor from Uganda writes,' Frank Duff -  Founder of the Legion of Mary - was a member of the Guild of St Camillus. He requested the Spiritual Director, Fr Bartlett SJ based in Rathfarnham to allow women to be admitted to the Guild but the spiritual director said no, the guild was for men only. Thus Frank Duff left the Guild and founded the Legion of Mary.'

The above photograph has been kindly donated by Mary Duddy, the granddaughter of Thomas McLoughlin. Thomas is seated in the middle. The picture is believed to have been taken c. 1947.
